What is a GWA Calculator?
A GWA calculator computes a Filipino student’s General Weighted Average by applying the standard Philippine weighted average formula automatically. You enter each subject’s final grade and the number of credit units it carries. The calculator multiplies each grade by its units, sums all the products, then divides by total units enrolled. The result is your GWA on the Philippine 1.00 to 5.00 numerical scale instantly, accurately, and without any manual computation.
This GWA Calculator supports the standard 1.00 to 5.00 scale used by most Philippine colleges, the UP grading system with its 4.00 conditional pass and DRP notation, the PISAY percentage-based scale from 70 to 100, and the NU and UST systems with their specific Dean’s List conditions. All university modes are accessible through the tabs at the top of the calculator.
What is GWA? General Weighted Average Explained
GWA stands for General Weighted Average. It is the official academic performance metric used by colleges and universities across the Philippines. Unlike a simple average that gives every subject equal weight, the GWA multiplies each subject’s grade by the number of credit units it carries before computing the average. A 5-unit Engineering major has five times more influence on a student’s GWA than a 1-unit Physical Education class.
Your GWA determines scholarship eligibility, Dean’s List recognition each semester, Latin honor qualification at graduation, and in many Philippine job applications it is the first filter employers apply when screening fresh graduates. On the Philippine grading scale, a grade of 1.00 is the highest possible mark representing 96 to 100 percent performance. A grade of 5.00 means the subject was failed. A grade of 3.00 is the minimum passing grade at most universities.
For the complete explanation of what GWA means in Philippine education, see our guide on GWA meaning Philippines.
GWA Formula How to Compute GWA in the Philippines
GWA = Sum of (Grade × Units for each subject) ÷ Total Number of Units
For each subject on your grade slip, multiply the final grade by the number of credit units that subject carries. Add all the resulting products together to get your total quality points. Divide that total by the sum of all credit units you were enrolled in. The result is your semestral GWA.
GWA Computation Complete Worked Example
A Filipino college student enrolled in five subjects for one semester:
| Subject | Final Grade | Units | Grade × Units |
| Mathematics | 1.50 | 5 | 7.50 |
| English | 2.00 | 3 | 6.00 |
| Filipino | 1.75 | 3 | 5.25 |
| Physical Education | 1.25 | 2 | 2.50 |
| NSTP | 1.00 | 3 | 3.00 |
| Total | 16 units | 24.25 |
GWA = 24.25 ÷ 16 = 1.52
This student’s semestral GWA is 1.52 in the Magna Cum Laude range. Mathematics alone with 5 units contributed 7.50 quality points out of 24.25 total nearly a third of the entire GWA result from a single subject. This is why improving performance in high-unit major subjects produces dramatically greater GWA improvement than improving low-unit electives.

How to Use This GWA Calculator 3 Steps
Step 1: Select Your University Tab
At the top of the calculator, choose the tab matching your institution. Standard covers most Philippine universities on the 1.00 to 5.00 scale. The UP System tab applies UP-specific rules including the 4.00 conditional pass and DRP exclusion. The PISAY tab switches to the 70 to 100 percentage scale. The NU and UST tabs apply institution-specific Dean’s List detection with their respective conditions.
Step 2: Enter Your Subjects, Grades, and Units
Type each subject name, enter the final grade you received, and enter the number of credit units that subject carries. Click Add Subject to include as many subjects as needed whether for one semester or your entire college career. There is no subject limit.
Step 3: Click Calculate GWA
Your result appears instantly: your exact GWA, Latin honor status showing whether you qualify for Summa, Magna, or Cum Laude, your equivalent GPA on the American 4.0 scale, and a complete subject-by-subject breakdown showing the quality points each subject contributed.
How to Compute GWA Every Scenario Covered
How to Compute Semestral GWA
Enter only the subjects and final grades from that specific semester. The result is your semestral GWA the number used to check Dean’s List eligibility, scholarship maintenance requirements, and academic standing for that specific term.
How to Compute Cumulative GWA in College Philippines
Enter all subjects from every semester of your college career together in one session from first year through the most recently completed semester. The calculator computes the correct cumulative weighted average across your entire academic record. This cumulative GWA is the number that appears on your official Transcript of Records and determines Latin honor eligibility at graduation.
Never compute cumulative GWA by averaging your semestral GWAs together. Always compute from the original grades and units of all subjects combined, because averaging semestral GWAs only produces an accurate result if every semester had identical unit loads which almost never happens.
How to Compute GWA in the UP System
The University of the Philippines uses the standard 1.00 to 5.00 scale with two important additions. A grade of 4.00 at UP is a conditional pass not a failing grade. A student who receives 4.00 has one academic year to take a removal examination. If unresolved, it automatically becomes a permanent 5.00. UP also uses DRP notation for officially withdrawn subjects, which are excluded from GWA. Select the UP System tab in the calculator to apply these rules automatically.
What Subjects Count in GWA Computation
Include every subject with an official final grade major subjects, minor subjects, Physical Education, NSTP, theology, ROTC, and all electives. The only exceptions are DRP subjects at UP (officially excluded) and INC grades (not included until resolved). All other subjects with any final grade from 1.00 to 5.00 are included whether passed or failed.

GWA Calculator with Units Why Credit Units Change Everything
This GWA calculator works with credit units, not just grades. Every subject carries a different unit weight a 5-unit Engineering subject has five times more GWA impact than a 1-unit PE class. Enter each subject’s grade AND units to get a mathematically correct weighted average.
Students who compute GWA without units get a simple average not their real GWA. A student with grades of 1.00, 2.00, and 3.00 has a simple average of 2.00 but if the 3.00 subject carries 5 units and the 1.00 subject carries only 1 unit, the actual GWA is much closer to 3.00. This calculator applies the correct formula every time: GWA = Σ(Grade × Units) ÷ Total Units.
Cumulative GWA Calculator
The cumulative GWA is the single number on your Transcript of Records that determines Latin honor eligibility at graduation. To compute cumulative GWA, enter all subjects from all semesters first year through your most recently completed term into the calculator at once.
Never average your semestral GWAs together. That method is mathematically incorrect unless every semester had identical unit loads, which almost never happens. If you took 21 units in first semester and 18 units in second semester, a simple average of the two semestral GWAs gives the wrong cumulative result. This calculator handles unlimited subjects across all years to give you the accurate cumulative GWA every time.
GWA to Percentage Conversion
Philippine universities use both numerical GWA grades and percentage equivalents. The conversions are standardized by CHED and adopted by universities nationwide. There is no single arithmetic formula the conversion uses the standardized table below.
| GWA Grade | Percentage Equivalent | Description | Honor Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.00 | 96–100% | Excellent | Summa Cum Laude zone |
| 1.25 | 93–95% | Superior | Magna Cum Laude zone |
| 1.50 | 90–92% | Very Good | Cum Laude range |
| 1.75 | 87–89% | Good | Dean’s List threshold |
| 2.00 | 84–86% | Satisfactory | Good standing |
| 2.25 | 81–83% | Fairly Satisfactory | Good standing |
| 2.50 | 78–80% | Passing | Passing |
| 2.75 | 76–77% | Barely Passing | Passing |
| 3.00 | 75% | Conditional Pass | Minimum passing |
| 5.00 | Below 75% | Failed | Must retake |
GWA Calculator vs Excel Which is More Accurate?
Many Filipino students build GWA calculators in Excel using the SUMPRODUCT formula. The correct Excel GWA formula is:
=SUMPRODUCT(grades_range, units_range) / SUM(units_range)
This works correctly in Excel when applied properly. However, Excel requires manual setup, offers no Latin honors detection, no GPA conversion, and no Dean’s List checking. This online GWA calculator applies the same weighted average formula automatically no spreadsheet setup needed, works on any mobile phone, and updates instantly.
STI GWA Calculator
STI College follows the standard 1.00–5.00 Philippine grading scale. Enter your STI grades and units into the Standard tab of this calculator to compute your STI GWA instantly.
BU GWA Calculator Batangas State University / Bicol University
Both Batangas State University (BatStateU) and Bicol University (BU) use the standard Philippine 1.00–5.00 scale. Use the Standard tab for accurate BU GWA computation.
CLSU GWA Calculator Central Luzon State University
CLSU applies the standard Philippine numerical grading system. Select the Standard (1–5) tab and enter your CLSU grades and credit units for instant results.
ISU GWA Calculator Isabela State University
ISU follows the standard 1.00–5.00 scale used across Philippine state universities. Use the Standard tab for accurate ISU GWA computation.
Latin Honors Philippines GWA Requirements at Graduation
Summa Cum Laude GWA of 1.00 to 1.20
The highest Latin honor in Philippine college. It requires a near-perfect academic record from first year to graduation zero failing grades anywhere on the complete transcript, zero unresolved INC grades at graduation evaluation, and no academic disciplinary record. A single grade of 5.00 at any point permanently disqualifies from all Latin honors regardless of all future performance.
Magna Cum Laude GWA of 1.21 to 1.45
The second-highest Latin honor. Students graduating Magna Cum Laude are highly competitive for graduate school admissions, CHED Faculty Development Programs, DOST-SEI grants, and the most competitive employer programs nationwide.
Cum Laude GWA of 1.46 to 1.75
The most commonly awarded Latin honor across Philippine universities. The 1.75 threshold is the same number that defines Dean’s List eligibility each semester. Students who make the Dean’s List consistently across their entire college career are building directly toward Cum Laude graduation.
Dean’s List Semestral GWA of 1.75 or Better
The Dean’s List is awarded each semester to students achieving a semestral GWA of 1.75 or better with no failing grades and no INC grades in that specific term. Consistent Dean’s List performance each semester is the most reliable path to Cum Laude recognition at graduation.
For the exact Dean’s List requirements at every major Philippine university including UST’s strict two-condition rule, see our guide on Dean’s Lister requirements Philippines.
GWA vs GPA Difference, Conversion Formula, and Table
Filipino students applying for international scholarships, graduate programs, or positions at multinational companies need to convert their Philippine GWA to the American GPA scale. A Philippine GWA of 1.75 excellent Cum Laude performance appears to an international reader as 1.75 out of 4.0, suggesting near-failing performance on their scale. Converting before presenting internationally is essential.
GPA ≈ 5.0 − GWA
| GWA (Philippines) | GPA (US 4.0) | Academic Level |
| 1.00 | 4.00 | Excellent Summa Cum Laude |
| 1.25 | 3.75 | Superior Magna Cum Laude |
| 1.50 | 3.50 | Very Good Cum Laude range |

How to Improve Your GWA Strategies That Actually Work
Prioritize High-Unit Subjects Above Everything Else
Because GWA is weighted by units, improving a grade in a 5-unit major subject produces five times the GWA impact of improving a 1-unit elective by the same amount. Every student with a Dean’s List or Latin honor target should identify their highest-unit subjects at the start of each semester and direct their primary effort toward those subjects first.
Use the Calculator to Project Target Grades Before Finals
Enter your current grades with units locked in, then try different hypothetical final grades in subjects where finals have not yet been submitted. The calculator shows exactly what score you need in each remaining subject to reach your target semestral GWA. A precise numeric target is far more actionable than a vague goal.
Never Allow a Subject to Reach 5.00
A failing grade of 5.00 destroys that semester’s GWA and permanently closes the door to Latin honors at graduation regardless of how excellent all future performance becomes. If you are struggling in a subject mid-semester with no path to passing, dropping it before the official drop deadline is always preferable to failing it. A DRP does not count in GWA. A 5.00 does permanently.
Frequently Asked Questions GWA Calculator Philippines
How do I compute my GWA using a calculator?
Enter each subject’s name, final grade, and credit units into the calculator above, click Calculate GWA, and the tool applies the formula automatically. Your result appears instantly including Latin honor status, GPA equivalent, and a subject-by-subject quality point breakdown. No manual math required.
What is the GWA formula in the Philippines?
The Philippine GWA formula is: GWA = Sum of (Grade × Units per subject) ÷ Total Units Enrolled. Multiply each subject’s final grade by its credit units, add all products together, and divide by total units. The result is your GWA.
What is a good GWA in the Philippines?
A GWA of 1.00 to 1.75 is excellent and qualifies for Latin honors at graduation. A GWA of 1.75 to 2.00 is very good and typically qualifies for the Dean’s List each semester. A GWA of 2.00 to 2.50 represents good academic standing and meets most government scholarship maintenance requirements. A GWA of 2.50 to 3.00 is passing. Any GWA numerically above 3.00 on the Philippine scale represents failing academic standing.
Is 2.50 a passing GWA in the Philippines?
Yes, a GWA of 2.50 is a passing grade equivalent to 78 to 80 percent performance. It does not qualify for Dean’s List recognition (which requires 1.75 or better) and falls below the 2.00 maintenance threshold required by most government scholarships.
→ See full breakdown: 2.50 grade equivalent Philippines
What is the minimum GWA to graduate in the Philippines?
Most Philippine universities require a cumulative GWA of 3.00 or better numerically 3.00 or lower on the 1.00 to 5.00 scale with no failing grades on the transcript to qualify for graduation. Some programs in engineering, medicine, and law have stricter requirements. Confirm graduation requirements with your specific university registrar well in advance.
What does INC mean in GWA computation?
INC stands for Incomplete. An INC grade is not factored into GWA computation until the student resolves the outstanding requirements and the professor records a final grade. Most Philippine universities allow one academic year to resolve an INC before it automatically converts to a failing grade of 5.00.
Can I graduate with Latin honors if I had a failing grade?
No. A single failing grade of 5.00 anywhere on the complete academic transcript permanently disqualifies a student from all Latin honors at graduation regardless of the cumulative GWA achieved.
What is the difference between GWA and GPA?
Philippine GWA uses a descending 1.00 to 5.00 scale where lower numbers mean better performance. American GPA uses an ascending 0.00 to 4.00 scale where higher numbers mean better performance. Both use the same weighted average formula. The conversion approximation is: GPA ≈ 5.0 − GWA.
How do I convert my GWA to GPA?
GPA is approximately equal to 5.0 minus GWA. A GWA of 1.75 converts to approximately GPA 3.25. A GWA of 2.00 converts to approximately GPA 3.00. For official applications, obtain a certified evaluation from WES (World Education Services) or ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators).
How many subjects can I add in this GWA Calculator?
There is no subject limit. Add as many subjects as needed whether for a single semester, a full academic year, or a complete multi-year college record from first year to final year.
Is this GWA Calculator free to use?
Yes, completely free. No registration, no login, no account creation, and no payment of any kind. Use it as many times as needed on any device mobile phones, tablets, and desktop computers.
What is the GWA formula in Excel?
In Excel, the GWA formula is =SUMPRODUCT(grade_range, units_range) / SUM(units_range). Select your grade column as grade_range and your units column as units_range. This produces the same result as the standard Philippine GWA formula: Σ(Grade × Units) ÷ Total Units.
How do I convert GWA to percentage in the Philippines?
Philippine GWA to percentage conversions: 1.00 = 96–100%, 1.25 = 93–95%, 1.50 = 90–92%, 1.75 = 87–89%, 2.00 = 84–86%, 2.25 = 81–83%, 2.50 = 78–80%, 2.75 = 76–77%, 3.00 = 75%. There is no single arithmetic formula the conversion uses the standardized table established by CHED and adopted by Philippine universities.
What is a passing GWA in the Philippines?
A GWA of 3.00 or numerically better (1.00 to 3.00) is passing at most Philippine universities. A GWA numerically above 3.00 on the scale represents failing academic standing. The minimum passing GWA for scholarship maintenance is typically 2.00 to 2.50 depending on the scholarship program.
How do I compute overall GWA for all semesters?
Enter every subject from every completed semester into this calculator at one time first year through your most recently completed term. The calculator computes the correct overall GWA weighted by units across your entire academic record. Never average semestral GWAs that produces mathematically incorrect results whenever semesters have different unit loads.
