UST GWA Calculator University of Santo Tomas

The University of Santo Tomas, the oldest existing university in Asia, uses the standard Philippine 1.00 to 5.00 numerical grading scale. What makes UST distinct from most other Philippine universities is a specific stricter condition for Dean’s List eligibility that trips up many Thomasians every semester without them knowing about it until recognition is already lost.

This calculator is built specifically for UST students. It computes your semestral or cumulative GWA using the exact weighted average formula UST applies, detects Dean’s List eligibility automatically including the two-condition rule unique to UST, and converts your result to GPA for international scholarship and graduate school applications.

UST Dean's List — Two-Condition Rule
Your overall GWA must be 1.75 or better AND every individual subject grade must be 2.00 or better. A single grade of 2.25 in any subject disqualifies from the Thomasian Dean's List — even if your GWA is 1.50. This calculator detects this automatically.

The UST Grading Scale  Complete Reference

UST uses the standard Philippine numerical grading scale where lower numbers represent better performance. A grade of 1.00 is the highest possible. A grade of 3.00 is the minimum passing mark at 75 percent. A grade of 5.00 means the subject was failed. This is the complete opposite of the American GPA system where higher numbers mean better performance  a fact every Thomasian applying internationally must clarify.

The column that most Thomasians do not notice until it matters: a grade of 2.25 is Fairly Satisfactory and a perfectly passing grade, but it is specifically the threshold that disqualifies Dean’s List eligibility at UST. Not because of the grade itself but because of the specific condition UST applies. The section below explains this in full.

UST GWA Formula  How to Compute Your Thomasian GWA

The GWA formula at UST is identical to the standard Philippine weighted average formula used by every Philippine university:

GWA = Sum of (Final Grade × Credit Units per subject) ÷ Total Credit Units Enrolled

For each subject in your enrollment, multiply the final grade by the number of credit units that subject carries. Add all the resulting products together to get your total quality points. Divide by the sum of all credit units you were enrolled in. The result is your semestral GWA.

UST GWA Computation  Complete Worked Example

A typical Thomasian student enrolled in a standard semester across 23 units:

SubjectFinal GradeUnitsGrade × Units
Major subject (Thomasian core)1.7558.75
Science subject1.5046.00
Theology2.0036.00
Filipino1.7535.25
English2.0036.00
Physical Education1.2522.50
ROTC1.0033.00
Total23 units37.50

UST GWA = 37.50 ÷ 23 = 1.63

This student’s semestral GWA is 1.63  in the Cum Laude range and qualifying for Dean’s List, provided both of UST’s specific conditions are also met.

The most important insight from this computation: the major subject with 5 units contributed 8.75 quality points, nearly a quarter of the entire 37.50 total, from a single course. This is the unit-weighting effect at the heart of the GWA formula. Improving a grade in a 5-unit major subject produces five times more GWA impact than the same improvement in a 1-unit elective. Every Thomasian with an honor or scholarship target should direct study effort toward the highest-unit major subjects first.

The Thomasian Dean’s List  UST’s Two-Condition Standard

This is the section that matters most for any Thomasian tracking academic recognition. The Dean’s List at UST has a requirement that almost no other Philippine university applies, and it catches students off guard every semester.

Condition 1: Semestral GWA of 1.75 or Better

The overall weighted average of all subjects for that specific semester must be 1.75 or numerically lower on the 1.00 to 5.00 scale. This is the standard condition that most Philippine universities require and most Thomasians already know about.

Condition 2: No Individual Subject Grade Above 2.00

Every single subject in the student’s enrollment for that semester must have a final grade of 2.00 or numerically lower. A grade of 2.25 in any one subject  even if the student’s overall GWA for the semester is an impressive 1.50  disqualifies the student from the Thomasian Dean’s List for that term.

This is the condition that most Thomasians do not know about. A student who achieved a GWA of 1.60 across the semester but received a 2.25 in one subject will not make the Dean’s List. The same student would qualify at NU, PUP, and most other Philippine universities based on their GWA alone.

Condition 3: No Incomplete Grade

No INC grade in any subject during that semester. An unresolved Incomplete disqualifies Dean’s List consideration for that term regardless of how strong the rest of the grades are.

Condition 4: No Academic Disciplinary Record

No academic disciplinary sanctions recorded for that specific term.

The calculator above detects all of these conditions automatically. It flags any subject grade above 2.00 and tells you clearly whether you meet both the GWA threshold and the individual subject condition for the Thomasian Dean’s List.

UST Latin Honors  GWA Requirements at Graduation

Latin honors at UST are determined by cumulative GWA across the student’s entire academic career at the university  every subject from the first semester of first year through the final semester before graduation.

Summa Cum Laude  Cumulative GWA of 1.00 to 1.20

The highest Latin honor at UST. It requires a near-perfect academic record from first year to graduation without exception. The conditions are absolute: zero failing grades anywhere on the complete transcript, zero unresolved INC grades at the time of graduation evaluation, and no academic disciplinary record anywhere in the student’s history. A single grade of 5.00 in any subject at any point permanently removes Latin honor eligibility regardless of how strong all subsequent semesters become.

Magna Cum Laude  Cumulative GWA of 1.21 to 1.45

The second-highest Latin honor. Thomasians graduating Magna Cum Laude are highly competitive for graduate school admissions at UST and internationally, CHED Faculty Development Programs, DOST-SEI grants, and top employer programs across the Philippines.

Cum Laude  Cumulative GWA of 1.46 to 1.75

The most commonly awarded Latin honor at UST. The 1.75 threshold is the same number that defines Dean’s List eligibility each semester. Thomasians who make the Dean’s List consistently across their entire college career are by definition building toward Cum Laude graduation  provided the no-failing-grade condition is maintained and the two-condition Dean’s List standard is met each term.

Always confirm the exact current Latin honor thresholds and any residency requirements directly with the UST Registrar’s Office before your graduation semester.

What Subjects Are Included in UST GWA Computation

Every subject in a student’s official enrollment for a given semester is included in GWA computation. This includes major professional subjects, general education subjects, Theology, Filipino, Physical Education, and ROTC.

Theology Subjects at UST

UST, as a Catholic institution operated by the Order of Preachers, requires Theology subjects across several semesters of the curriculum. These are academic course units and are counted in GWA computation exactly like any other subject. A strong Theology grade contributes positively to the overall GWA in exactly the same way a strong major subject grade does.

ROTC at UST

ROTC participation may be included in GWA computation depending on the student’s program and the specific ROTC component. Confirm the treatment of ROTC grades with your college registrar.

College-Specific Academic Policies

UST has multiple colleges including Medicine and Surgery, Nursing, Architecture and Fine Arts, Commerce and Business Administration, Engineering, Arts and Sciences, Tourism and Hospitality Management, Education, Pharmacy, and Science. Some colleges may have additional academic standing requirements beyond the university-wide policies described here. Always confirm the specific requirements of your college with the college’s own academic affairs office.

UST Scholarship GWA Requirements

Different scholarship programs carry different GWA maintenance requirements. Always confirm directly with your specific scholarship coordinator before each semester.

Thomasian institutional scholarships generally require scholars to maintain semestral performance consistent with Dean’s List standards: a GWA of 1.75 or better with no individual subject grade above 2.00 per semester.

DOST-SEI scholars enrolled at UST must maintain a semestral GWA of 2.00 or better on the 1.00 to 5.00 scale to retain scholarship privileges.

Private and external scholarships have varying requirements depending on the granting institution. Some private scholarship programs impose stricter GWA floors than DOST-SEI. Confirm directly with your scholarship coordinator before finalizing your academic plan for each semester.

Frequently Asked Questions UST GWA Calculator

What is the Dean’s List requirement at UST?

The Thomasian Dean’s List requires a semestral GWA of 1.75 or better AND no individual subject grade above 2.00 in that semester, with no INC grades and no disciplinary record. The second condition is stricter than most other Philippine universities, which typically require only an overall GWA threshold.

What GWA do you need for Cum Laude at UST?

Cum Laude at UST requires a cumulative GWA of approximately 1.46 to 1.75 across the complete academic career at UST, with zero failing grades on the entire transcript. Confirm the exact current threshold with the UST Registrar’s Office before your graduation semester.

Does UST include Theology in GWA computation?

Yes. Theology subjects at UST are academic course units included in GWA computation exactly like any other subject. Strong performance in Theology contributes positively to the overall GWA.

What is the minimum passing grade at UST?

The minimum passing grade at UST is 3.00 on the standard Philippine 1.00 to 5.00 scale, equivalent to 75 percent performance. Any final subject grade of 3.00 or numerically lower is passing. A grade of 5.00 is failing and requires the subject to be retaken.

Can I use this calculator for all UST colleges?

Yes. All colleges at UST use the same 1.00 to 5.00 grading scale and the same GWA computation formula. Enter the grades and units from your specific college enrollment and the calculator provides your accurate UST GWA.

How does UST Dean’s List compare to other Philippine universities?

UST’s Dean’s List is stricter because of its two-condition requirement. At NU and most state universities, only an overall GWA threshold is required. At UST, every individual subject grade must also be 2.00 or better in the same semester. A student with a GWA of 1.60 who received a 2.25 in one subject does not qualify for the Thomasian Dean’s List but would qualify at most other Philippine universities with that same GWA.

What happens if I have an INC grade at UST?

An INC grade disqualifies Dean’s List consideration for that semester and is not counted in GWA computation until the missing requirements are completed and the professor records a final grade. Most Philippine universities allow one academic year to resolve an INC before it automatically converts to a failing grade of 5.00 on the permanent record.

How do I convert my UST GWA to GPA for international applications?

Use the approximation: GPA is approximately equal to 5.0 minus GWA. A UST GWA of 1.75 converts to approximately GPA 3.25. A GWA of 1.50 converts to approximately GPA 3.50. The calculator above shows your GPA equivalent automatically with every result. For official applications requiring a certified GPA evaluation, obtain one from WES (World Education Services) or ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators), both of which accept Philippine Transcripts of Records.
