UP GWA Calculator University of the Philippines
The University of the Philippines uses the same standard Philippine 1.00 to 5.00 grading scale as most other Philippine universities, but with three important features that no other major Philippine university applies: the grade of 4.00 as a conditional pass, the DRP grade for dropped subjects, and the College Scholar and University Scholar recognition system in place of a conventional Dean’s List.
This calculator is built specifically for Iskolar ng Bayan across all UP constituent universities UP Diliman, UP Los Baños, UP Manila, UP Visayas, UP Mindanao, UP Baguio, UP Open University, and UP Clark. It computes your semestral or cumulative GWA using the exact weighted average formula UP applies, detects College Scholar and University Scholar eligibility automatically, handles the 4.00 conditional grade correctly, and converts your GWA to GPA for Fulbright and international graduate school applications.

The UP Grading Scale Complete Reference
UP uses the standard Philippine numerical grading scale where 1.00 is the highest and 3.00 is the minimum passing grade with three grades that exist only in the UP system and a small number of other Philippine universities.
| Grade | Description | Percentage | Academic Standing |
| 1.00 | Excellent | 96–100% | University Scholar range |
| 1.25 | Superior | 93–95% | University Scholar range |
| 1.50 | Very Good | 90–92% | University Scholar range |
| 1.75 | Good | 87–89% | College Scholar threshold |
| 2.00 | Satisfactory | 84–86% | Good standing |
| 2.25 | Fairly Satisfactory | 81–83% | Good standing |
| 2.50 | Passing | 78–80% | Passing |
| 2.75 | Barely Passing | 76–77% | Passing |
| 3.00 | Passing | 75% | Minimum passing Scholar disqualifier if below this |
| 4.00 | Conditional Pass | UP-specific: removal exam required within 1 year | |
| 5.00 | Failed | Below 75% | Failed must retake subject |
| INC | Incomplete | Requirements unfinished Scholar disqualifier | |
| DRP | Dropped | Officially withdrawn excluded from GWA |
The three UP-specific grades 4.00, INC, and DRP are what set UP apart from UST, NU, PUP, and most other Philippine universities. Understanding how each affects GWA computation and Scholar eligibility is essential for every Iskolar ng Bayan.
The UP Grade of 4.00 What It Means and What to Do
The grade of 4.00 is one of the most misunderstood grades in the Philippine university system. It is not a failing grade. It is a conditional pass the student has passed the course at a minimum level but is required to take a removal examination within one academic year to replace it with a full passing grade.
If the student takes and passes the removal exam, the 4.00 is replaced with a passing grade and the subject is resolved. If the student does not take the removal exam within one year, or fails it, the 4.00 automatically converts to a permanent 5.00 on the official transcript a full failing grade with all the academic consequences that entails.
While a 4.00 is unresolved, it is included in GWA computation at face value. A single unresolved 4.00 in a 5-unit major subject can devastate a semester’s GWA. UP students with academic standing concerns should treat unresolved 4.00 grades as urgent schedule and clear removal exams as early as possible in the academic year.
The DRP Grade When Dropping Protects Your GWA
A grade of DRP at UP means the student officially withdrew from the subject through proper channels before the drop deadline. DRP subjects are not included in GWA computation and do not count as failures.
For a UP student who is clearly going to fail a subject, dropping it before the deadline and receiving a DRP is almost always better than staying enrolled and receiving a 5.00 or an unresolved 4.00. A DRP has no impact on GWA. A 5.00 or an unresolved 4.00 that converts to 5.00 both permanently damage the GWA and remove eligibility for Latin honors at graduation.
UP GWA Formula How to Compute Your GWA
GWA = Sum of (Final Grade × Credit Units per subject) ÷ Total Credit Units Enrolled
For each subject in your UP enrollment, multiply the final grade by the number of credit units. Add all the products together to get your total quality points. Divide by the sum of all credit units enrolled. The result is your semestral GWA.
UP GWA Computation Complete Worked Example
A typical UP student enrolled in a standard semester across 19 units:
| Subject | Final Grade | Units | Grade × Units |
| Major subject | 1.50 | 5 | 7.50 |
| Science elective | 1.75 | 3 | 5.25 |
| Social Science | 2.00 | 3 | 6.00 |
| Language and Society | 1.75 | 3 | 5.25 |
| Mathematics | 2.25 | 3 | 6.75 |
| Physical Education | 1.25 | 2 | 2.50 |
| Total | 19 units | 33.25 |
UP GWA = 33.25 ÷ 19 = 1.75
This Iskolar ng Bayan achieved a semestral GWA of exactly 1.75 qualifying as College Scholar, provided no grade is below 3.00 and no INC grade is present in the enrollment.
The unit-weighting effect matters here: the 5-unit major subject contributed 7.50 quality points, more than any 3-unit subject. Improving performance in high-unit major subjects produces the greatest GWA impact per subject studied.
College Scholar and University Scholar UP’s Academic Recognition System
The University of the Philippines does not use the title Dean’s List. Instead, UP recognizes academic excellence each semester through two designations that carry real practical benefits most importantly, priority registration for the following semester, which is one of the most valuable academic privileges at UP given how competitive enrollment periods are.
College Scholar Semestral GWA of 1.75 or Better
College Scholar status is awarded to UP students who achieve a semestral GWA of 1.75 or numerically lower, with no grade below 3.00 in any subject enrolled that semester, and no INC grade.
The no-grade-below-3.00 condition means that a student who receives exactly 3.00 in one subject the minimum passing grade is disqualified from College Scholar that semester regardless of how strong the overall GWA is. This is stricter than the Dean’s List standard at most other Philippine universities.
University Scholar Semestral GWA of 1.45 or Better
University Scholar is the higher recognition. It requires a semestral GWA of 1.45 or numerically lower, with the same no-grade-below-3.00 and no-INC conditions. University Scholar status represents the top tier of academic performance at UP each semester and carries additional recognition and privileges beyond College Scholar standing.
| Recognition | GWA Required | Additional Condition |
| University Scholar | 1.45 or better (numerically lower) | No grade below 3.00, no INC |
| College Scholar | 1.75 or better (numerically lower) | No grade below 3.00, no INC |

UP Latin Honors GWA Requirements at Graduation
Latin honors at UP are determined by cumulative GWA across the student’s entire academic career at the university every subject from first year through the final semester before graduation.
Summa Cum Laude Cumulative GWA of 1.00 to 1.20
The highest Latin honor at UP. It requires a near-perfect academic record without exception: zero failing grades anywhere on the complete UP transcript, and full compliance with UP’s residency requirement a minimum number of units must have been completed at UP specifically. A single 5.00 or an unresolved 4.00 that converted to 5.00 at any point permanently removes Latin honor eligibility regardless of how strong all subsequent semesters are.
Magna Cum Laude Cumulative GWA of 1.21 to 1.45
The second-highest Latin honor. Iskolar ng Bayan graduating Magna Cum Laude are among the most competitive applicants for UP graduate programs, CHED Faculty Development Programs, DOST-SEI graduate grants, Fulbright scholarships, and top employer programs in the Philippines and internationally.
Cum Laude Cumulative GWA of 1.46 to 1.75
The most commonly awarded Latin honor at UP. The 1.75 threshold is the same number that defines College Scholar eligibility each semester. UP students who consistently achieve College Scholar standing across their entire academic career are by definition building toward Cum Laude graduation provided zero failing grades are recorded anywhere on the transcript.

Always confirm the exact current Latin honor thresholds and residency requirements directly with the UP Office of the University Registrar of your constituent university thresholds may vary between UP Diliman, UP Los Baños, UP Manila, and other campuses.
UP Scholarship and Financial Assistance GWA Requirements
Different scholarship and financial assistance programs at UP carry different GWA maintenance requirements. Always confirm directly with the relevant office before each semester.
UP College Scholarship is directly tied to College Scholar status. Students who achieve a semestral GWA of 1.75 or better with no grade below 3.00 and no INC receive tuition and other fee discounts or waivers depending on their campus and program.
DOST-SEI scholars enrolled at UP must maintain a semestral GWA of 2.00 or better on the UP 1.00 to 5.00 scale equivalent to Satisfactory academic standing at 84 to 86 percent performance.
UP STFAP (Socialized Tuition and Financial Assistance Program) provides financial assistance based on family income. Academic standing requirements vary by STFAP bracket confirm current requirements with the UP Office of Scholarships and Student Services.

Frequently Asked Questions UP GWA Calculator
What is the GWA formula at UP?
GWA = Sum of (Grade × Units) ÷ Total Units identical to the standard Philippine GWA formula used by every university. Enter your UP grades and unit values and the calculator computes your exact GWA.
What is the difference between College Scholar and University Scholar at UP?
College Scholar requires a semestral GWA of 1.75 or better with no grade below 3.00 and no INC. University Scholar requires a semestral GWA of 1.45 or better with the same conditions. University Scholar is the higher recognition and requires significantly stronger overall performance.
What does a grade of 4.00 mean at UP?
A grade of 4.00 at UP is a conditional pass not a final failing grade. The student has one academic year to take a removal examination and replace the 4.00 with a passing grade. If not resolved within one year, the 4.00 automatically becomes a permanent 5.00 on the transcript. While unresolved, the 4.00 is included in GWA computation at face value.
Does a grade of 3.00 disqualify from College Scholar at UP?
No — a grade of exactly 3.00 is the minimum passing grade and meets the College Scholar condition. The condition is no grade below 3.00, meaning grades of 4.00, 5.00, or unresolved INC disqualify. A grade of 3.00 itself is acceptable for Scholar eligibility.
Is DRP included in UP GWA computation?
No. A DRP (Dropped) grade is not included in GWA computation and does not count as a failure. For UP students clearly going to fail a subject, dropping it before the deadline and receiving a DRP is almost always better than staying and receiving a 5.00 or an unresolved 4.00.
Which UP campuses does this calculator work for?
This calculator works for all UP constituent universities using the standard 1.00 to 5.00 grading scale UP Diliman, UP Los Baños, UP Manila, UP Visayas (Iloilo, Cebu, Tacloban), UP Mindanao, UP Baguio, UP Open University, and UP Clark. Enter the grades and units from your specific campus enrollment.
How do I convert my UP GWA to GPA for Fulbright or international applications?
Use the approximation: GPA is approximately equal to 5.0 minus GWA. A UP GWA of 1.75 converts to approximately GPA 3.25. A GWA of 1.45 converts to approximately GPA 3.55. The calculator above shows your GPA equivalent automatically. For official applications requiring a certified evaluation, obtain one from WES (World Education Services) or ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators), both of which accept UP Transcripts of Records.
Does PE count in UP GWA computation?
Yes. Physical Education subjects at UP are included in GWA computation the same as any other enrolled subject. A strong PE grade contributes positively to the overall GWA and because PE is typically a low-unit subject (1 to 2 units), its impact on the overall weighted average is smaller than that of a 3-unit or 5-unit major subject.
